Warden Construction

Completed March 2022
Budget £250,000

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is a busy Cheshire Hospital founded in 1905. They are a specialist `hub` centre for emergency and high-risk general surgery, one of only four in Greater Manchester and covering the South-East sector of the region.

Project Scope

Operation theatres 8,9,10,11 required extensive modernisation as the existing equipment was outdated. The design brief was to refit the theatres with the latest LED luminaires, complete with green lighting options. The theatre control panels were dated and required replacing with modern Digital Theatre Panels.
Existing operating lights were to be replaced with new ' state of the art' lighting, featuring preset lighting controls that allow staff members to choose the exact light intensity and specific lighting positions required.

Contract arrangements
Warden Construction awarded us the contract based on our skill set, our existing relationship and knowledge of this NHS Trust, and our excellent track record with Warden.

All of our operatives were in possession of CSCS cards. All RAMS were in place and signed off before work commenced.

Elements of the refit

  • Lighting with green light technology by Whitecroft's in-house design team
  • Whitecroft's in-house design team
  • Addressable reporting Emergency
  • Lighting by Luxonic's in-house design team
  • Brandon Medical surgeon's panel
  • Brandon Medical surgeon's luminaire
  • Shire medical gas control alarm panels
  • Schneider BMS controls
  • Howarth Airtech specialist ventilation controls
  • Medi-Teknique specialist gases alarm commissioning

Project Challenges

The Theatres are in the heart of a busy working hospital. This required us to maintain a close liaison with Trust management, its staff and other contracting teams at all times. As a result, live building isolations were arranged, along with safe and unobtrusive transfer of materials to and from the workplace; we achieved this safely by only moving materials at specifically agreed times using caged trolleys.

The pandemic was very active during the project, so we had to accommodate delays with lead times and deliveries into the work schedule.

Skills Involved

  • Electrical design
  • Lighting Design
  • Emergency lighting design
  • CAD drawings by our in-house design team
  • Director involvement with the Trust
  • Site management closely liaising with the Trust and the clinical teams
  • Schneider BMS controls
  • Howarth Airtech specialist ventilation controls
  • Medi-Teknique specialist gases alarm commissioning

We completed on budget with all aspects operating smoothly and efficiently. The Trust and Wardens were highly pleased with the result.

I want to say that working on the theatres with the GRB teams has been a very good experience. The work has been done to a very high standard, and we look forwards to the planned further theatre refits begin.
As the main contractor, we would like to do more work of this scale with GRB, so please pass on my thanks to your teams.
